Abortion costs

Abortion at an abortion clinic is free of charge for women living in the Netherlands who are insured on the basis of the Long-term Care Act (Wet Langdurige Zorg; WLZ; a national insurance scheme for exceptional medical expenses). Do you legally live in the Netherlands? Most likely you are automatically covered by the Long-term Care Act.

To determine if you are covered by the Long-term Care Act, we need the following documents:

  • Your health care ID card or policy document of your Dutch health insurance. You may also show us the digital policy document on your phone.
  • Valid proof of identity

Abortion clinics in the Netherlands are funded by the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports. Abortion costs are not paid by your health insurance and are not charged to your deductible excess (‘eigen risico’). This means you will not receive any invoice copy or other communication from your health insurance, nor will the treatment be displayed on any healthcare cost statement. Please note: if you have an abortion in the hospital, payment will be settled through your health insurance.

No Dutch health insurance, but covered by the Long-term Care Act (WLZ)

Don’t have Dutch health insurance? You may be covered by the Long-term Care Act (WLZ). If so, you need to proof that you pay tax in the Netherlands. For this purpose, please bring one of the following documents on your first visit:

  • Certificate from the Personal Records Database (‘uittreksel basisregistratie’; BRP) from your municipality
  • Your latest payslip
  • Official tenancy agreement (no sublet)

Foreign students

Are you studying in the Netherlands as an exchange student? Then the costs of treatment will be at your own expense. A BSN number, GBA registration and/or student insurance (AON) do not entitle you to compensation through the Long-term Care Act (WLZ).
Only if you work in paid employment in the Netherlands alongside your studies and pay taxes here, the treatment will be free of charge. In that case, bring a copy of your last pay slip and/or employment contract with you to your appointment.

Illegal resident, temporary resident in the Netherlands, or living abroad

If you are not entitled to compensation through the Long-term Care Act (WLZ) or if you live abroad, you will have to pay for the abortion yourself. Maximum treatment costs are decided by the Dutch government. Payment has to be made at the reception desk, prior to treatment. Please call us for the current rates.
