Complications

Possible complications from an abortion pill are: serious blood loss, retention of foetal tissue and/or persistent pregnancy.

Possible complications from an instrumental treatment are: perforation or cervical rupture, serious blood loss, residue in the uterus (0.5%) or side-effects of medication.

On average, the incidence of complications is around 0.9%. Serious complications are dealt with in cooperation with our backup hospital, the Kennemer Gasthuis in Haarlem. In approximately 0.1 to 0.2% of cases, a hospital admission is needed.

It applies in general that the risk of complications increases in proportion to the duration of the pregnancy.
